Although you’re able to remove the trays for eating, drinking, brushing, flossing, and special occasions, you’ll need to wear them for 20 to 22 hours per day for best results. And typically, you’ll wear the same aligner trays for one to two weeks. Considering how often you must wear them, you might wonder how to clean Invisalign trays. How to Clean Invisalign Trays
Typically it is recommended that you clean your Invisalign aligners at least twice a day — much like you brush your teeth twice a day. They should also be cleaned prior to each insertion. This will prevent discoloration and odors.
To clean the aligners, brush them with a soft-bristled toothbrush using a small amount of non-abrasive toothpaste. (Note: You might find it easiest to brush the outside of the aligners when they’re still on your teeth.) Then, rinse them with lukewarm water. The process is quick and easy!
You can also use Invisalign Cleaning Crystals or similar cleaning tablets to remove plaque in about 15 minutes. These are optional but provide an effective deep clean.
Keep in mind that your overall oral hygiene is especially crucial when you’re undergoing a teeth-straightening treatment like Invisalign. Brush twice daily, floss at least once daily, and visit your dentist regularly to keep your teeth and gums healthy. In addition, brush your teeth after each meal before you re-insert your aligners to prevent food debris and bacteria from lingering on your teeth, trapped by the aligner trays.
Is it possible to stain my aligners?
Yes. If you eat foods or drinks known to stain teeth (like marinara sauce, berries, red wine, curry, soy sauce, etc.) and put in your aligners immediately afterward, you may stain them. This is why it’s important that you brush your teeth after every meal. You can also stain your aligners if you suck on mints or menthol candies while wearing them, which is why it’s always important to remove your aligners before eating or drinking.
What if I don’t have a toothbrush and/or toothpaste handy?
If you don’t have access to cleaning supplies, rinse your mouth thoroughly with water and hold your aligners beneath warm running water before you re-insert the aligners. Then, brush and floss your teeth and clean your aligners at your earliest convenience. Try not to make a habit of this.
Can I clean my Invisalign aligners using denture cleaners?
No. Do not use denture cleaners to clean Invisalign aligner trays. They may damage the surface of the aligner, making it duller and more visible.
Can I clean my Invisalign aligners using mouthwash?
No. Do not soak your aligners in mouthwash. Like denture cleaners, mouthwash can damage the surface of the aligner, making it duller and more visible.
Do I need to clean my aligners before storing them?
Yes. If you won’t be wearing your aligners for a little while, brush them, rinse them off, and dry them before storing them in a protective case for safekeeping.
Do I need to clean the aligner case?
Yes, you should clean the aligner case from time to time. Handwash the case with soap and water. Do not put it in your dishwasher.
