Cleaning & Exams

Routine dental cleanings and exams are the foundation of lifelong oral health. At Keen Smiles, we recommend visiting our office at least every six months so you can stay ahead of issues before they become serious.

What to Expect from Your Visit

Keeping your smile healthy starts with prevention. During a professional cleaning and exam at Keen Smiles, our hygienists and dentists work together to assess your oral health and remove buildup that can lead to cavities, gum disease, and other conditions.

A typical appointment will include:

  • Digital X-rays to get a complete picture of your oral health
  • A thorough examination to look for decay, disease, or changes
  • Removal of plaque and calculus (tartar) buildup
  • Polishing your teeth for a smooth, bright surface
  • Checking existing restorations such as fillings and crowns
  • Screening for gum disease and oral cancer

Regular cleanings and exams are essential even if you practice excellent home care, because many dental issues develop silently and are only detectable by a professional

Healthy Habits: Protecting Your Smile Over Time

Professional cleanings and exams help you:

  • Maintain a healthy, beautiful smile
  • Detect problems early when treatment is easier
  • Reduce the risk of gum disease and tooth loss
  • Stay educated about at-home oral care options

At your visit, feel free to ask our team about brushing and flossing techniques or the products we recommend. We’re happy to customize your care and help you feel confident about your oral health.

How Often Should You Come In?

Most patients benefit from cleanings and exams every six months. However, if you’re at higher risk for dental disease — such as having a history of gum disease, systemic health concerns, or heavy plaque buildup — we may recommend check-ups more frequently. Your dental team will tailor a schedule that supports your long-term oral health.

Between Visits

For smoother appointments and better overall oral health:

  • Brush at least twice daily
  • Floss at least once daily
  • Choose a balanced diet with limited sugary snacks
  • Avoid tobacco products
  • Watch for any oral changes, such as sensitivity, discoloration, or sores

Wonderful experience as a first time patient! The staff was so nice, they really did a great job setting me up. The hygienist routinely checked in on me to ensure I was comfortable through out my cleaning and the dentist really took time to visit with me and go over my concerns. Highly recommend.
